These sound much better than the stock speakers. It is a pain to find a good place to mount the xover, but well worth the effort. I put baffles behind the speakers to protect them, and improve the sound. I had to cut the center out of my stock tweeters to mount the new ones in, but that was no problem really. Until I pick up a new amp they are powered directly off of my Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD head unit, and they still sound great. My only complaint would be that Pioneer changed from metal to plastic mounting ears, and during the install one of them split while screwing it in to the door. It still holds, but I don't like that it happened. If it wasn't for this I would have rated them five stars. I am running them off a deh6200bt pioneer deck and an alpine vpower 600w 4ch. they are paired with some D series 6 1/2's in the back. The switch from coaxials to components was a huge difference. The high notes were a bit much but with proper tuning, i had them sounding great. I chose not to use the -3db. these speakers will get VERY loud. i am sending them at least 150w of clean alpine power and i can go all the way to max volume without distorting at all. I listen to rap/rock/dubstep/hiphop and these were an outstanding choice. they have a good full range (im using the 80hz hpf)and are the perfect complement to my low end (2 ts-w3002d4's on a prsd1200spl @1olm custom ported). finally i can hear my music over 143db of bass and the flush mount tweets look way sick.Only thing is the ad says 280w max power and on the box of the speakers it... They are a bit over-sized at 6.75" which can be easily remedied by fabricating your own baffles or using the ones that are supplied by pioneer. A quick note that I feel important is that these speakers will tend to sound sub-par when powered off a head-unit, which is why I feel powering them off an external amplifier is a necessity to show off their true abilities.The mid range speaker cones are constructed from the same "rock" material that the higher end pioneer 720PRS speakers are constructed from. Upon handling these speakers you can tell they are pretty beefy. The cone does not provide much flex when manually moving it as compared to a paper cone. The mid-range does lack a very small bit of mid-bass but its not very noticeable to the average listener. The tweeters are soft dome so they are not as harsh on the ears as aluminum tweeters but still go plenty high when provided the wattage needed... Read more |
